Henderson Park Hīkoi
Discover the history and Māori stories connected to the whenua of Henderson.
Overview
The Henderson Park hīkoi (guided walk) explores one of West Auckland’s long-standing community spaces while uncovering the deeper stories connected to the area. As participants walk through the park and surrounding pathways, they hear kōrero tuku iho (stories of the past, oral traditions) that connect the present-day landscape with the histories of mana whenua (local iwi, indigenous authority).
Through guided walking and immersive audio storytelling, participants learn about whakapapa (genealogy), local history, and the cultural significance of the whenua (land) beneath their feet. The experience encourages people to see familiar places differently, revealing layers of knowledge that are often hidden within everyday environments.
